What Teams Need To Do, According To One Writer

Danno has sent me a piece written by the Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch explaining what the writer feels are the needs for each team are as trade deadline approaches. It’s always interesting to see what others feel the Habs should do too.

Here’s the rundown:

Anaheim Ducks — Buyers

NEEDS: They were able to add a top-four defenceman by bringing back Francois Beauchemin from Toronto. May add depth winger.

THEY’D MOVE: LW Jason Blake, D Andreas Lilja, D Paul Mara, C Todd Marchant.

Boston Bruins — Buyers

NEEDS: Now that they’ve lost C Marc Savard (post-concussion syndrome) for the season, they’ll seek depth up front. Want to add a puck-moving blueliner.

THEY’D MOVE: D Andrew Ference, D Mark Stuart, W Blake Wheeler.

Buffalo Sabres — Sellers

NEEDS: With a new owner coming in, GM Darcy Regier is on a short leash. Won’t do much more than deal for picks.

BEING SHOPPED: C Tim Connolly, RW Mike Grier, C Jochen Hecht, C Rob Niedermayer, D Craig Rivet.

Calgary Flames — On the fence

NEEDS: Jay Feaster’s tenure as interim GM has been under-whelming. Apparently, the Flames are much happier, but he’s done nothing in terms of moves.

IF THEY SELL: D Jay Bouwmeester, LW Curtis Glencross, C Olli Jokinen.

Carolina Hurricanes — On the fence

NEEDS: GM Jim Rutherford hasn’t decided if he’s a buyer or seller. The ’Canes wanted to get younger until they caught up to Thrashers in race.

IF THEY SELL: RW Erik Cole, RW Chad Larose, D Joni Pitkanen.

Chicago Blackhawks — Buyers

NEEDS: They don’t have much cash and made all of their moves after winning the Cup. Added forward Michael Frolik last week in a deal with Florida. Goaltending a bit suspect.

THEY’D MOVE: D Nick Boynton.

Columbus Blue Jackets — Sellers

NEEDS: They’ve been looking for a puck-moving D for two years. The clock is ticking on GM Scott Howson.

BEING SHOPPED: C Derrick Brassard, G Steve Mason, D Fedor Tyutin, D Jan Hejda.

Dallas Stars — Buyers

NEEDS: They have the biggest chip with pending UFA C Brad Richards, but he likely won’t be moved. If the bankers running the team clear the money, expect the Stars to get a blueliner.

THEY’D MOVE: C Mike Ribiero.

Detroit Red Wings — Buyers

NEEDS: Part of the reason the Wings have remained successful is they don’t panic. They signed G Evgeni Nabokov only to lose him on waivers to the Islanders.

THEY’D MOVE: RW Patrick Eaves, D Ruslan Salei.

Edmonton Oilers — Sellers

NEEDS: The Oilers are in full rebuild mode. They won’t be seeking anything more than draft picks.

BEING SHOPPED: RW Dustin Penner, D Ladislav Smid, C Shawn Horcoff.

Florida Panthers — Sellers

NEEDS: GM Dale Tallon has been tasked with rebuilding this team from top to bottom.

BEING SHOPPED: RW Radek Dvorak, LW Rostislav Olesz, LW Chris Higgins, D Bryan McCabe, LW Cory Stillman, G Tomas Vokoun.

Los Angeles Kings — Buyers

NEEDS: They want to add scoring up front. They’d like a big-name player. Failed to land Marian Gaborik from the Rangers.

THEY’D MOVE: C Michal Handzus, LW Alexi Ponikarovsky.

Minnesota Wild — On the fence

NEEDS: Would like to add a winger to play with Mikko Koivu if they stay in playoff race. If Wild falls out, will unload pending UFAs.

IF THEY SELL: LW Andrew Brunette, C John Madden, RW Chuck Kobasew, RW Antti Mietinen, G Jose Theodore.

Montreal Canadiens — Buyers

NEEDS: Looking to add blue-line help and size up front. They’ll certainly look at Ottawa D Chris Phillips.

THEY’D MOVE: C Scott Gomez, LW Andrei Kostitsyn, D Yannick Weber.

Nashville Predators — Buyers

NEEDS: Already added their big piece by picking up Ottawa C Mike Fisher without taking anyone off the roster. Need to keep re-sign pending UFA D Shea Weber.

THEY’D MOVE: RW J.P. Dumont.

New Jersey Devils — Sellers

NEEDS: Someone to play with Ilya Kovalchuk for the next decade or so. A replacement for Martin Brodeur when he retires.

BEING SHOPPED: C Jason Arnott, D Colin White, LW Brian Rolston, C Dainius Zubrus.

New York Islanders — Sellers

NEEDS: You name it, they want it. GM Garth Snow’s hands tied by the fact he can’t spend any money. They’ll just try to unload.

BEING SHOPPED: D Radek Martinek, D Milan Jurcina, C Zenon Konopka, C Doug Weight.

New York Rangers — Buyers

NEEDS: If they’re going to do anything in the post-season, they need a QB for the power play. Will likely make a pitch for Blues D Eric Brewer.

THEY’D MOVE: D Matt Gilroy, C Todd White, D Michael Del Zotto.

Ottawa Senators — Sellers

NEEDS: Goalie is the No. 1 priority. Won’t get it here.

BEING SHOPPED: D Chris Campoli, D Sergei Gonchar, C Chris Kelly, RW Alex Kovalev, D Filip Kuba, D Chris Phillips, C Peter Regin, LW Jarrko Ruutu.

Philadelphia Flyers — Buyers

NEEDS: The Flyers might bring in a goalie for insurance or a depth forward like Carolina’s Erik Cole. Not a lot of cap space.

THEY’D MOVE: RW Nikolai Zherdev.

Phoenix Coyotes — On the fence

NEEDS: They were one of the most active teams at the deadline last season.

IF THEY SELL: D Adrian Aucoin, RW Lee Stempniak, RW Radim Vrbata.

Pittsburgh Penguins — Buyers

NEEDS: The loss of C Evgeni Malkin and the uncertainty of the Sidney Crosby situation means the Pens will go shopping for a scoring forward.

THEY’D MOVE: RW Aaron Asham, C Michael Rupp.

San Jose Sharks — Buyers

NEEDS: GM Doug Wilson likes to stick his nose into every deal out there. Really needs a defenceman.

THEY’D MOVE: RW Devon Setoguchi, D Niclas Wallin.

St. Louis Blues — Sellers

NEEDS: The Blues have fallen off the map again this season and need to get more scoring. They have money issues, but financing is supposed to be close.

BEING SHOPPED: D Eric Brewer, C Brad Boyes, D Erik Johnson.

Tampa Bay Lightning — Buyers

NEEDS: Bolts GM Steve Yzerman wants to add a quarterback for the power play. Yzerman won’t deal top draft picks.

THEY’D MOVE: LW Simon Gagne, G Dan Ellis, G Mike Smith.

Toronto Maple Leafs — Sellers

NEEDS: They were able to get a scoring forward in Joffrey Lupul, but want more. Phil Kessel hasn’t worked out so far.

BEING SHOPPED: G J.S. Giguere, D Tomas Kaberle, D Mike Komisarek, RW Kris Versteeg.

Vancouver Canucks — Buyers

NEEDS: GM Mike Gillis may add some depth up front. Have some injuries suddenly on defence.

THEY’D MOVE: Nobody. Don’t need to make changes.

Washington Capitals — Buyers

NEEDS: GM George McPhee hasn’t shown a great ability to moves. Many believe he still needs a goalie and centre.

THEY’D MOVE: D Scott Hannan, C Matt Hendricks.

  1. Just watched the Vancouver Olympics anniversary special and I’ve realized how much I miss watching the olympics. Too bad they can’t have that sort of thing ever year. It was great to be able to just turn on your TV and see a sport you’ve never really watched before and really get into it.

Anyway, what I really wanted to talk about was PK’s fight and how there is now a Maple Leaf player that I respect. When PK went to face off against him, Lupul was undoing his helmet when PK sprinted forward and started throwing punches. According to Subban, he didn’t know what he was doing but as Lupul kidly put it, he gave him “the benefit of the doubt”, but he made did a good job of instead of simply complaining about how PK plays but by complimenting his playing but explains that the “benefit of the doubt” may run out. PK’s gotta stop making enemies or every game is gonna turn into a Pens-Isles game

  2. I know it’s from Eklund and all but he’s put out the rumour that Gomez could be part of a trade with Phoenix. As much as I think Gainey signed Gomez to help land Gionta and maybe Cammaleri I would so like to see him moved through a trade. I would also settle for a buy-out this summer if that is what it takes.

  3. Oh and also I’d like to give a cyber-high-five to my fellow Gilli’ for what he’s done for the Canucks and for putting together another Canadian Stanley Cup contender (the Habs being the other)

  4. Hi Gillis, I know there are a lot of Habs fan who will disagree with you about the Lupul thing. Twitter especially was over it, and I also don’t quite see it your way. The undoing of the helmet thing was very split second. It wasn’t like Lupul was undoing it and suddenly Subban lurched forward. Both made motions to undo it and then Suban went at him but it wasn’t at all like he got the upper hand by this. It was very even. The problem most have is, when is the bashing of the kid going to stop. My wife, who loves him, compares him to a kitten – all over the place, getting into mischief, just being a young kitten. And Lupul says he’ll give him the benefit of the doubt but what does that mean? Next time he’ll beat him up? Sue him? Hit him with his stick? This Lupul thing reminded me of the Mike Richards thing. Complaining about a new guy. I think these players should concentrate on criticizing the Matt Cooke’s of the league. And surely when they were raw rookies they also made mistakes. Montreal has a chance to have a real star here but everyone wants to bring him down a few nothces. I say let him grow and mature like a kitten does.

  5. Gillis. I’m with you here. The Canucks are strong. However, if they blow it in the playoffs again like they do every year, there might be a lot of folks out here who might decide to give up on them permanently and watch cricket instead. I know for sure Canuck fans are at their wits end. They’ve seen before good Canucks teams and they get their hopes up, but these hopes are dashed every year in the playoffs. Kind of like Washington.

  6. very interesting post. However i strongly disagree the canucks need depth up front. They have 3 of the top 11 scorers in the league and might have the most balanced first 3 lines in the league. If the canucks need help anywhere right now its on D’ due to the amount of injuries at the moment.

  7. Jordy, it’s true. The Canucks, especially with the Sedins and Kesler, are great up front. And aren’t they missing three of their top D?

  8. Its really been fun to watch the sedins and kesler do there thing this year, even alex burrows is starting to come on strong now. And yes unfortunately we are missing Dan Hamhuis, Alex Edler and Keith Ballard. I have been hearing rumors that Vancouver might try and get Chris Phillips out of Ottawa but who knows how true those rumors are.
