Unassuming Toe

Toe Blake may have won  the Stanley Cup twice by then, but it didn’t mean much to some of the oldtimers back home. Blake liked to tell the story of him going home to Coniston, Ont. in the summer of 1944 and there was no one there to greet him, so he lugged his suitcase to the back of the station. “Hello, Toe,” said an old man who he had worked with in the mines. “You leaving town?”
