Tiger Woods scoffs at Stanley Cup final

I don't think anybody really watches hockey any more: Tiger Woods on Monday. I don’t think anybody really watches hockey any more: Tiger Woods on Monday. (David J. Phillip/Associated Press)
It seems Tiger Woods isn’t much of a hockey fan.

Woods, the world’s No. 1 golfer, told reporters Monday that he had no preference when it comes to who captures the Stanley Cup, the Detroit Red Wings or Pittsburgh Penguins.

“I don’t really care,” he said. “Let’s talk about the Dodgers.

“I don’t think anybody really watches hockey any more.”

Woods made the remark on a conference call promoting the PGA Championship, to be played Aug. 4-10 at Oakland Hills Country Club in the Detroit suburb of Bloomfield Township.

Detroit leads Pittsburgh 3-2 in the best-of-seven Stanley Cup final — the first championship showdown between the two cities since the 1909 World Series, won by the Pirates in seven games over the Tigers.

Since then, Detroit teams have won 21 pro sports titles: the Red Wings with 10, in 1936, 1937, 1943, 1950, 1952, 1954, 1955, 1997, 1998 and 2002; the Pistons in 1989, 1990 and 2004; the Lions in 1935, 1952, 1953 and 1957; and the Tigers in 1935, 1945, 1968 and 1984.

Pittsburgh’s pro franchises have won 11 titles since 1909: the Penguins with two, in 1991 and 1992; the Steelers in 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979 and 2005; and the Pirates in 1925, 1960, 1971 and 1979.

  1. Re; Tiger Woods ” I don’t think anyone watches hockey any more, please tell me how anyone could sit for 4 hrs and watch golf!! I’d much rather watch paint dry or grass grow !! How a pro like Tiger the best in his field down play the quality & effort required to be top flight hockey player or any other in their chosen field of play, fine you don’t like hockey shutup I don’t like golf & I’ll shutup !With this attitude south of the border, why can’t Bettman see the future of Hockey lies just north (Hamilton,Winnepeg,Quebec,Halifax etc!!)Thats where the true fans live & die with their teams.
Tiger stick to golf & flogging Buicks & just shutup!!

  2. DK,

In the immortal words of John Kruk (Philly extraordinaire): I’m not an athlete. I’m a baseball player …. or something to this effect.

Hmmm, I guess golfers must be feeling pretty special these days, I mean, what with talk of maybe officially recognizing `golf’ as a sport by conducting dope tests …..

Usually Tiger is smart like Gretzky was, but his comment is right up there with G’s `Mickey Mouse team’. Let me revise that: what Gretzky said was merely `stooooopid’ in the sense of being undiplomatic whereas what Tiger said was `stupid’ in the sense of somebody opening his big yap and mouthing off about something of which he/she is clearly utterly ignorant. And, please, spare the bs there are no `racial overtones’ to this. Wow, a really good golfer, Fuzzy Zoeller, makes a joke about `fried chicken’ – a regional not racist joke – and the whole country goes beserk & figuratively `lynches’ him, yet Tiger makes a much smarmier comment and, well, nada … doesn’t say much for the p.c. crowd, eh. I wonder, what does the mealy-mouthed Montreal english media have to say about this? Oh right, I forgot, this isn’t a case of a big bad white man `smacking a black man upside the head with a stick’ …… No matter it was purely a case of the usual `hockey stuff’ but, hey, what’s the diff here? No racial overtones? Ha! What a load of bs. Hmm, the one-way street is going the other way now – so much for the glorious oh-so-righteous fight for social justice.
