The Gomez List

NHL leader lists are an excellent thing. We get to see various groups of players, usually with Wayne Gretzky at the top, leading a pack of players in a variety of categories.

Although Gretzky’s not in all them of course. He’s not up there in Playoff Penalty Minutes for example. That belongs to Dale Hunter and Chris Nilan with 729 and 541 respectively, with Claude Lemieux third with 529.

Tons of lists. Lots of players with lots of goals and points and such. If you print it off Wikipedia you get about 46 pages worth.

But we’ve got a guy on a list too.

I’d like to mention our very own Scott Gomez.

He’s on this list – Guys Who Have Gone Longer Than 40 Games Without A Goal.

  1. That is just disgusting. He has got to be the worst trade we ever made. The guy just simply doesn’t care. He’s won Cups already and he’s filthy rich so what’s it to him? They need to unload this guy.

  2. Hey Dennis,Sounds almost like a bucket list, things you would like to do before you die.I think if the record is there Scotty will be the one to set it.I do think though that he does try ,he skates like the wind but has never been a great depositer of pucks into the net.The only great deposits he makes are to his bank account.

  3. You make me wanted to make a little list too:
I love stats and hockey numbers. (thanks to behindthenet.ca)

2010-2011 forwards with at least 60 game play in 5on5 situations:

    RANK-NAME-TEAM-G/60
    1 TOBYPETERSEN DAL 0.00
    2 CRAIGADAMS PIT 0.08
    3 TODDMARCHANT ANA 0.08

    6 STEVEBERNIER FLA 0.16
    7 ZENONKONOPKA NYI 0.17

    18 JARKKORUUTU ANA 0.26
    19 DEREKDORSETT CBJ 0.27
    20 CODYMCLEOD COL 0.28

This is crazy. And I am not going in stats like zone start, qualteam and everything.
Ok he is not a scorer…If you do the same thing with Point/60minutes, he is rank 24.

    22 DARCYHORDICHUK FLA 0.93
    23 TANNERGLASS VAN 0.95
    24 SCOTTGOMEZ MTL 0.95
    25 DEREKDORSETT CBJ 0.96
    26 JARKKORUUTU ANA 0.96

Take a look at players around him, this is totally absurd.
Ok this was one of his worst season, but can he be worst?

I don’t even mention how much money he makes.

  4. And Darth, of the 20 others on the list, 9 are ahead of him but he has a great chance to move up with a bullet. How exciting is that!

  5. Dennis, I’m also pretty sure he’ll beat the record. What an absolute waste of salary and time. I’ve said this before but when I think of all the great players we had and we’ve got someone like him here – it really bothers me.

Aren’t we lucky to have him? PG scouted him and Gainey picked him up. What they were thinking was beyond me.

I had heard many stories that this is his last chance – let’s hope they stick to their guns. What annoys me as well is that they keep giving him all this ice time and he does dick all with it.

  6. Maybe boxing lesson? or switch him as a D.

If there is absolutely no way we can send him away, help Gionta and put Gomez on the fourth line.

  7. hobo – that may actually happen! I wouldn’t be surprised one damn bit.

We should all have a little contest and try to predict when and if he’ll score this season.

  8. Vanouse, if he goes quite a bit longer without doing anything at all, I say eat the contract and get rid of him. Chalk it up as a failed venture. Molsons has enough money, although they wouldn’t like it. So the solutiuon is this – we must drink as much Molson as possible to make up for their lost money on Gomez.

  9. Dennis, Molson is actually losing beer sale revenues by keeping Scott Gomez.

    Let me explain.

I used to enjoy drinking the odd beer while watching my Habs. But now I’m finding I need something much stronger than beer to get me through the game – so long as Scott Gomez is stinking up the rink.

So now it’s whisky. If it keeps up much longer I might have to turn to Keith Richards’ recreational pain killers.

Mr. Molson. Do yourself a favour and send Scott Gomez down to Hamilton and I promise to start drinking your beer again.

Just make sure you hire Dennis Kane as your Flag Kid/Stick Boy/Anthem Singer.

    Deal?

    You won’t regret it.

  10. Danno, beat you to it. I’m already into the heroin, morphine, crystal meth, and DKRSFB. Yes Mr. Molson, I’ll give it all up – well, maybe not the DKRSFB, but the other stuff, if you send Mr. Gomez far away from Montreal. And yes, my bags are packed for the next home game when I’m stick boy and flag kid. And as I’m the Mississauga Street Blues Boy, I hope nobody minds the anthem sung as a blues tune.

  11. Add up the salaries of everyone else on the list, add in inflation and the total will still will be much less than Gomez’s.

Dennis, your blues version of O Canada would be as memorable as Jimi Hendrix’s Star Spangled Banner.

  12. Chris, with me as Mississauga St. Delta bluesman Sugar Kane, the Bell Centre would be transfixed. Then I would lay down the microphone and harmonica and get back to my stick boy job.
