Las Vegas Oddsmakers Aren’t Crazy About The Habs

First, a brief explanation on how these are calculated:

Moneyline odds

Moneyline odds are favoured by American bookmakers. There are two possibilities, the figure quote can be either positive or negative.

Moneyline odds are often referred to as American odds. Moneyline refers to odds on the straight-up outcome of a game with no consideration to a point spread.

Positive figures
If the figure quoted is positive, the odds are quoting how much money will be won on a $100 wager (this is done if the odds are better than even). Fractional odds of 4/1 would be quoted as +400, while fractional odds of 1/4 cannot be quoted as a positive figure.
Negative figures
If the figure quoted is negative, then the moneyline odds are quoting how much money must be wagered to win $100 (this is done if the odds are worse than even). Fractional odds of 1/4 would be quoted as -400, while fractional odds of 4/1 cannot be quoted as a negative figure.
Even odds
Even odds are quoted as +100 or -100. Some bookmakers display the negative symbol while others do not

Now this from AssociatedContent.com.

The Las Vegas Hilton Superbook has released the odds to win all eight Stanley Cup opening playoff series with three teams installed as prohibitive favorites. The Washington Capitals are the strongest favorites at -600 to win their series, while the Chicago Blackhawks and the San Jose Sharks are -400 to win their playoff series.

Montreal Canadiens +460 vs Washington Capitals -600.
Another eight seed, the Montreal Canadiens taking on a formidable opponent in the number one seed Washington Capitals. Why are the Washington Capitals -600? Alex Ovechkin is one NHL player that can take control of every game. Washington should skate circles around the once proud Montreal team. Washington -600 will beat Montreal soundly in four games.

Ottawa Senators +235 vs Pittsburgh Penguins -270.
Defending Stanley Cup Champions, the Pittsburgh Penguins received a tough draw for their first round series starting Wednesday. Sidney Crosby should be enough to put the Pens over the Sens in a short series. Ottawa will present several challenges for the Penguins but the Penguins -270 will prevail and win the series in five games.

Philadelphia Flyers +180 vs New Jersey -220.
The Philadelphia Flyers made it into the Stanley Cup Playoffs on the last day with a soul crushing overtime shootout defeat of the New York Rangers in the last game of the season. Their reward? The Flyers now must play the New Jersey Devils, the number two seed in the East. It will be a short lived Stanley Cup Playoffs for the Flyers as New Jersey -220 will take them down in five or six games.

Boston Bruins +125 vs Buffalo Sabres -165.
The Boston Bruins/Buffalo Sabres series may be the toughest game to call in the entire Stanley Cup first round. This game could possibly be the most brutal series to watch and most brutally played series of all Stanley Cup rounds. This will be the definition of Stanley Cup Playoff hockey, Boston will give Buffalo a run for their money but Buffalo, -165 will prevail in a hard fought seven game series. One thing to look for after this series, bet against the winner.

Los Angeles Kings +200 vs Vancouver Canucks -240.
The Los Angeles Kings enter the Stanley Cup Playoffs as the number six seed and a +200 underdog. The Kings are hungry to advance in the playoffs, since this is their first appearance in eight years. Vancouver has solid goaltending and enters this playoff series as a -240 favorite. The former Smythe Division rivals have had many heated Stanley Cup Playoff series and this may have more heat than some are anticipating. Los Angeles at +200 is the upset pick of the first round.

Phoenix Coyotes +145 vs Detroit Red Wings -185.
Another great match up in the Stanley Cup first round is Phoenix and Detroit. Phoenix losing coaches, going bankrupt, enters the first round as the number four seed but are underdogs according to the Las Vegas Hilton Superbook. The Detroit Red Wings, the number five seed are favored in what should be a spirited Stanley Cup Playoff series. Take the small dog, Phoenix, +145 to win this series in seven games even though some experts are pushing Detroit for a second Stanley Cup Final appearance in two years.

Colorado Avalanche +280 vs San Jose Sharks -400.
The Stanley Cup Playoffs are famous for a number eight seed upsetting the number one seed in the first round. Well if it happens in this playoff series, everyone will be shocked. Look for the San Jose Sharks to make short work of Colorado. San Jose -400 will win this series and advance in four or five games.

Nashville Predators +280 vs Chicago Blackhawks -400.
Another Stanley Cup walkover series should be Chicago stomping out Nashville. Nashville isn’t that bad for a seven seed but Chicago has owned them in the regular season 4-2. Chicago -400 should be able to stifle Nashville in five games, possibly four games.

  1. The thing that stands out most for me “The Stanley Cup Playoffs are famous for a number eight seed upsetting the number one seed in the first round.”

If I had any money to put on an upset, I’d be putting it down on Philadelphia and Montreal. Detroit too, but the odds have them favoured.

  2. Chris, Vegas hasn’t eactly gone out on a limb. I suppose them having Phoenix and LA winning their series is a bit of a gamble. And you’re right. Underdogs advance often in the playoffs. One could make a good buck betting on the Habs.
