His Beautiful Goal Wasn’t Enough

This could have been the one. When Mathieu Darche slipped the puck to Maxim Lapierre and Lapierre burst between two Islanders’ defencemen to score the Habs third goal, which gave his team a 3-2 lead midway through the third period, it could have been not only Lapierre’s biggest and prettiest goal of the year but also the Canadiens most important goal of the year.

It would have put the Habs in the playoff. It would have made Lapierre a surprising hero, at least for a while. But it wasn’t to be, and the Islanders tied it up and won in a shootout.

It just wasn’t what it could have been.
