From Then To Now

Below are the final standings from last year. Notice how Montreal, 15th in the east, ended with a feeble 78 points after 82 games. This year they sit at 59 points after just 46 games.

The Rangers last year ended in first place. This year they’re in the 8th spot, with the Winnipeg Jets breathing down their necks.

The Islanders last year finished one point ahead of the Canadiens, in 14th place. This year the Islanders are in 6th place with 54 points, and are finishing strong.

Toronto finished in 13th. This year it could be 5th or 6th.

And Pittsburgh, in 4th last year, is way out in front this time around with 70 points after 46 games, which is only eight less than what Montreal managed over their entire 82 games.

In the west, L.A. ended in the 8th and final spot, and went on to win the Stanley Cup.

Anaheim, 13th with 80 points over 82 games last year, is now 2nd with 64 points after 46 games.

And Columbus, last place last year, are currently one point out of a playoff spot.

  1. 78 points in 82 games doesn’t seem so bad. That’s .476, almost par. In the CFL that corresponds to 17 points and may even get an Eastern team a home play-off game.
