Carey Price Named NHL First Star

On the strength of two shutouts, Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price was named the NHL’s First Star for this week.

Price stopped 25 shots in a 4-0 win against the Carolina Hurricanes on Wednesday, then stopped 17 shots in a 4-0 win against the New York Rangers on Saturday, Price made 30 saves in a 3-2 shootout loss against the Buffalo Sabres on Monday.

After a slow start to the season, Price is the owner of a 2.16 goals-against average and .917 save percentage

San Jose Sharks defenseman Marc-Edouard Vlasic and Philadelphia Flyers rookie forward Matt Read earned Second Star and Third Star honors, respectively.

In three games last week, Vlasic racked up 1 goal and 6 assists along with a plus-7 rating. In the Sharks’ 5-2 win against the Detroit Red Wings on Friday, Vlasic had a goal and 4 assists.

Read is showing he’ll be in the discussion for the Calder Trophy throughout this season. He had 4 goals and 1 assist in 3 games this week, including the winner with 18.6 seconds left in regulation to beat the Phoenix Coyotes 2-1 on Friday.

  1. So this is the second time this season he’s done this (if memory serves me correctly). Great stuff. I really would love to see him win the Vezina. That trophy belongs here!
